Spring Fling Softball/Baseball Round-Up: Tuesday, May 21st
DI SOFTBALL
Meigs Co. 14, Riverside 1 (Class 2A)
The Meigs Co. Lady Tigers returned to the Class 2A softball tournament at the Spring Fling on Tuesday with a resounding walloping of the Riverside Lady Panthers, 14-1. The Lady Tigers Kylee Hitson had a clutch day at the plate with a three run double in the third and a homerun in the seventh scoring three more runs in a big nine run inning for the victors.
Lainey Fitzgerald and Lainy Goforth also hit dingers in that inning, as well.
Fitzgerald earned the win for the Lady Tigers, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out nine and walking one over seven innings.
Sadie Scott went 3-for-4 in the Lady tigers’ lead-off spot as Sierra Howard, Alexis Kazy and Fitzgerald all had two hits each.
Meigs advances to play Huntingdon (21-4-1) who edged Westmoreland by a 1-0 score. First pitch will be at noon (CT) on Wednesday on Starplex #2.

Soddy Daisy 5, Creek Wood 4 (Class 3A)
Regan Rowan’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave Soddy Daisy a walk off come from behind win over the Creek Wood Lady Red Hawks. Trailing 4-2, Skylar Gooden opened the inning for the Lady Trojans with ground ball center then stole second before Lilyana Blaylock laid down a bunt single advancing her to third. Gooden scored on Abby Faires’ hard ground ball to left. Rowan the followed with another hard ground ball to left scoring Blaylock and Faires with the game winner.
Rowan was the winner in the circle, giving up five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Soddy Daisy next faces Gibbs (28-12), 11-1 winners over South Gibson, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

DII SOFTBALL
Silverdale 7, Lakeway Christian 1 (Class A)
Hitting out of the three spot, Kennedy Stinson led the Lady Seahawks to their 48th win and berth in the DII-A state winner’s bracket finals as Silverdale notched a 7-1 win over the Lakeway Christian Lady Lions.
Stinson drove one over the left field fence in the in the first netting two runs and then singled in the the second for another RBI and tallying her fourth RBI with a sac fly in the sixth.
The Lady Seahawks’ ace left hander, Ella Cunningham went the distance for the win, sitting down 14 Lakeway batters on strikes, while scattering three hits and walking three.
Cunningham, Stinson, Jaliyah Whitaker and Gabbie Hensley all had two hits for Silverdale.
The Lady Seahawks next face USJ, 9-7 winners over Knox Grace, at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday.

Baylor 8, Chattanooga Christian 4 (Class AA)
The Baylor bats were booming as the Lady Red Raiders collected 13 hits in the 8-4 win over Chattanooga Christian in a DII-AA Final Four match-up with their cross-town rival.
Knotted at two-all heading into the bottom of the fourth, Baylor erupted for six runs on seven hits with Riley Oleksik driving in two on a homerun to left. Also in the inning, Amiya Leach, Addi Yates, Chloe Cunningham and Holly Merritt all singled, Kaylee Snyder doubled and Rory Oleksik tripled
Nyla Halfacre and X Lewis each had two RBIs for CCS.
Snyder started for Baylor and went five innings, giving up four hits and four runs, while striking out nine and walking two. Avery Shamblin struck out six in two innings of relief for the Lady Red Raiders.
Baylor advances to play St. Benedict (31-1) at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, while the Lady chargers face CPA (17-8)in a loser’s bracket game, also at 3:30.

Oakdale 5, South Pittsburg 2 (Class 1A)
South Pittsburg fell behind in the fourth when the Oakdale Eagles posted a four spot on the board and added another run in the seventh to seal the win in the two teams’ opening round game in the Class 1A tournament. The Pirates scored two in the bottom of the sixth but gain any traction.
Kamden Wellington took the loss on the mound for South Pittsburg as he went the full seven innings. The Pirate hurler also went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead his team with the stick.
South Pittsburg falls to the loser’s bracket where they will face the loser of Eagleville and Union City at 10:00 a.m. at Rockvale High School.

Greeneville 4, Signal Mountain 0 (Class AA A)
The Greeneville devils got on the board early and rode the arm of Carson Quillen to a 4-0 two-hit shutout over the Eagles in an opening game of the Class 3A state tournament at Smyrna High School on Tuesday night.
Ben Timblin took the loss for signal Mountain. He went five innings, surrendering three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Cash Keene and Timblin had the hits for the Eagles, with Keene picking up the lone RBI.
Signal Mountain will begin its battle back through the loser’s bracket on Wednesday when they face Station Camp (25-11) at 10:00 a.m. CT.

DII BASEBALL
Goodpasture 4, Boyd Buchanan 2 (Class A)
Boyd Buchanan fell to the Goodpasture Cougars 4-2 in the Final Four of the DII-A state tourney Tuesday afternoon at MTCS. The Bucs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, but could not make it stand as Goodpasture scored two in the bottom of the second and then added one run in the third and another in the sixth.
Cooper Jones took the ninth pitch of his first inning at bat over the left field wall to account for Boyd Buchanan’s only two runs of the game. The Cougars came back with two scores in the second to tie the game and the added one more in the third and another in the sixth.
Jones absorbed the loss on the bump, giving up eight hits while striking out five with two base on balls.
The Bucs fall to the loser’s bracket where they will face Providence (26-12) at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

Baylor 6, Christian Brothers 4 (Class AA)
Down by as many as four runs, Baylor rallied to take a 6-4 win over the Christian Brothers Purple Wave in the DII-AA Final Four at Wilson Central High School.
Christian Brothers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first that held until the top of the third when the Red Raiders tied it at four all. Baylor struck for three in the second when Jack Shuman singled home Zach Morrison and a Nelson McKinight single scored Henry Allen and Chris Renager.
The Red Raiders added a lone run in the third on a Blake Lundy homerun to left.
The score remained knotted at four all until Baylor loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and added one run when Morrison walked pushing Kilby Hartley across the plate and then another when Matt Dill singled on a ground ball to center scoring Amari Jefferson from third.
Jax Bishop earned the win with a six inning, 107 pitch outing, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
