Homemade Wonton Strips
These wonton strips are surprisingly quick and make an easy way to add a nice crunch to all types of soups and salads. They taste amazing on my personal favorite Asian chicken salad. They also taste great on Hawaiian haystacksor egg rolls in a bowl.
The great thing about these wonton strips is that you can fry or bake them just like my tortilla strips. Frying them will taste more like what you’d find in a Chinese restaurant (and do taste better in my opinion) but they still taste great baked and are a little healthier that way. They just won’t puff up quite as much.
You can serve these with duck sauce or Chinese mustard like they do in American Chinese restaurants. However I mainly like to serve them in salads or in soups! If I make the baked version, they almost turn out like a baked chip, so I like to dip those in hummus or salsa.
Wonton Wrappers
If this is your first time using wonton wrappers in the kitchen, you may be wondering where to find them. Most local grocery stores carry them, as well as Asian supermarkets. They’re typically sold in the refrigerated or freezer sections. Sometimes this varies by store though, so it may be easiest to ask an employee.
If you’re having a hard time finding wonton wrappers at the store, you can use egg roll wrappers to make wonton strips too. Wonton wrappers taste more authentic in my opinion, but egg roll wrappers crisp up nicely and still taste delicious!
Fried Version
When making wonton strips, my personal preference is to fry them on the stove. They’ll taste more similar to those in a Chinese restaurant and will puff up a bit more. To fry them, follow the below instructions.
- Cut the wonton wrappers into 1/2″x 2″ strips.
- Heat about an inch of oil in a pan until it reaches 360°F.
- Place about 12 strips evenly into the oil. When the bottoms begin to turn brown, flip and cook a few more seconds. You will likely need to fry the strips in a few batches.
- Once they are golden brown, remove with a slotted spoon. Then place on a paper towel lined plate to cool.
Tip: Do a test run before adding in your first batch of wonton strips! Once the oil has heated up, place one strip in. If it browns too fast, you will need to turn down the heat on your stove before adding in the others.
Baked Version
Another way to make wonton strips is to bake them in the oven. They don’t puff up as much as the fried version, but they still taste great and are a little healthier since there’s less oil.
- Cut the wonton wrappers into 1/2″x 2″ strips.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray.
- Line the strips evenly on top of the pan and S&P to taste.
- Bake for about 5 to 8 minutes, or until the strips are golden and crispy.
Storage
After frying or baking the wonton strips, let them cool completely on a paper towel lined plate. This helps absorb any extra oil. Then store in an airtight container or bag. They will keep for up to 3 days if stored properly.

Ingredients
- 10 square wonton wrappers
Optional: canola or vegetable oil
Instructions
Cut the wonton wrappers into strips about 1/2"x 2".
To bake:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray. Then line the strips on the baking sheet. S&P to taste. Bake for 5-8 minutes, or until crispy.
To fry:
Heat about an inch of oil in a pan over medium heat (to reach 360°F). Test the oil by placing one strip in. If it browns to fast, turn down the heat.
Place about 12 wonton strips evenly over the oil (you may need to do a few batches). Watch carefully as they'll burn fast. Once you notice the bottoms turning golden brown, flip and cook a few more seconds. After a couple batches, you may need to turn the heat to low.
Once the strips are golden brown, remove with a slotted spoon. Place on a plate lined with paper towels to remove excess grease.
Notes
You can also use egg roll wrappers if you cannot find wonton wrappers.
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
